British singer Steve Harley has died at the age of 73. Harley was best known as frontman of the rock group Cockney Rebel and had hits in the 1970s with songs such as “Sebastian” and “Make Me Smile.
Harley had had cancer for some time. For that reason, he had also stopped performing, although he reported in late 2023 that the treatment was going well.
“We are devastated that our wonderful father and husband passed away peacefully at home, with his family by his side,” his relatives wrote on Facebook.
“We know he will be terribly missed by people around the world.”
Solo
After the breakup of Cockney Rebel in 1978, Harley went solo. He had a number of hits, but never managed to match the success of the 1970s.
He released his last album in 2020.
Steve Harley’s funeral will be held in private.
