The changes planned for the Monaco Grand Prix are certainly exciting! As you point out, Monaco is often considered one of the least dynamic races, as it is difficult to overtake on the narrow circuit. Mandating multiple pit stops could indeed increase the chance for unexpected strategies and unpredictable events during the race.
This could allow drivers in the middle or at the back to still get a chance to move forward, making the race much more interesting.
Removing the restrictions on the number of gearboxes is also an interesting decision. The reliability of current technologies makes such restrictions less relevant, and it gives teams more room to further develop and adapt their cars.
This could potentially strengthen the competition, as teams now have more flexibility to experiment with their designs.
What do you think of these changes? Could this really make Monaco more exciting, or will it still be a difficult race to improve on?
‘If you’re at the front, you don’t want pit stops’
Alonso’s response is really good: pit stops can indeed have different effects depending on your position in the race. If you’re at the front, you don’t want pit stops because you don’t want to lose your position. But if you’re in the midfield or at the back, extra pit stops can help you adjust your strategy and maybe even gain a few places.
It could add an interesting dynamic to an otherwise predictable race in Monaco.
Test days in Bahrain are also fast approaching, and that will be an exciting time to see how the teams have prepared for the new season.
It will be a good opportunity to see which cars perform best, especially given the changes to the regulations and the technologies that could be important this season.
Are you excited about the first race in Melbourne? It’s always a good opener for the season!
On Wednesday 26 February, Thursday 27 February and Friday 28 February, the drivers will have time to test their cars at the Bahrain International Circuit.
The first race is on Sunday 16 March in Melbourne, Australia.
