Mel Gibson has regained his right to carry a firearm, nearly 14 years after it was taken away from him in a domestic violence incident.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi reversed the 2011 decision, The New York Times reports.

The 69-year-old actor was convicted of assaulting his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, which led to a suspended sentence and counseling.

Gibson lives in Nevada, where convicts are not allowed to own firearms.

The Justice Department recently said that convicted felons would be allowed to own firearms again if they earned it.

Restoring firearms to domestic abusers is a serious matter, because there are serious consequences for people with a history of domestic violence being in possession of firearms, former pardoner Elizabeth G. Oyer said of the plans.

Oyer was fired by President Donald Trump last month, but the department said that had nothing to do with Gibson’s case.
