Americans Own A Whopping 97.5 Percent Of National Wealth

The richest half of the population in the United States owned about 97.5 percent of the national wealth at the end of 2024.

The poorest half owns the remaining 2.5 percent.

The poorest half of the population did become slightly less poor during President Joe Biden’s term, according to figures from the US central bank.

The 66.6 million poor households owned approximately 4 trillion dollars (around 3.7 trillion euros) in net wealth at the end of last year. That is an increase of 1.25 trillion dollars compared to four years earlier.

During the same period, the richest households in America – there are only 133,000 in total – saw their wealth grow by more than 6 trillion dollars.

This is mainly due to the strong increase in shares and investment funds: rich households own no less than a quarter of all American shares.
