Sarah Michelle Gellar will reprise her role as Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The actress will play the character in a reboot of the series that streaming service Hulu is working on, according to American media.

The project is being developed by director Chloé Zhao, known for the film Nomadland. Zhao is said to have been commissioned by Hulu to make a pilot, a test episode to see if a project appeals to the public.

Gellar played Buffy in seven seasons between 1996 and 2003. According to film magazine Variety, she will play a recurring supporting role in the new series as Buffy and the lead role will be played by a new ‘vampire slayer’.

The actress said for years that she did not see anything in a return of the series, but recently changed her mind about this. “It’s funny because I always said no, because the show was perfect the way it was. But Sex and the City and Dexter showed me that there are ways to bring a show back. That’s what made me consider it,” she told Deadline last December.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer was about a teenage girl who hunted vampires. The original 1992 film starred Kristy Swanson in the title role and featured Dutch actor Rutger Hauer. The series, which started a few years later, saw Sarah Michelle Gellar take over the lead role.
