As First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama found it difficult to choose clothes that were both authentic and representative. She wanted to avoid her outfits attracting more attention than her message, she said in an interview with People.
“I was a well-known person, but not a star. That meant the clothes could never attract more attention than what I had to say,” Obama says.
The wife of former US President Barack Obama tried not to be influenced by comments about her appearance, she says.
Yet, Obama looks back with satisfaction on the fact that many people could identify with her style. “If I wore something and it sold out quickly, that meant most women could afford it.
I wanted people in America, regardless of their race or political persuasion, to be able to connect with me.”
Obama also consciously chose not to discuss fashion and appearance during her eight years in the White House. “I was afraid it would take over everything,” she explains. She now feels more confident about herself.
“This version of Michelle probably worries less about what others think.”
