The red Gibson ES-355 guitar that Liam Gallagher smashed the night Oasis broke up has sold for £289,800 (approximately €332,000) at auction, according to auction house Propstore.
Before Oasis’s show in Paris in August 2009, a major argument broke out backstage between brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher. Liam grabbed the guitar, swung it around, and smashed it.
He knew it was one of Noel’s favorite guitars, says Propstore.
A few hours after the argument, Noel announced his departure from the band. In 2011, Noel had the broken guitar repaired and continued playing it for a while while performing with his own band, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.
The brothers have since resolved their disagreement. This year, Oasis embarked on a series of reunion concerts around the world.
Oasis was one of the most popular bands in the world in the 1990s. The British band sold millions of copies of albums like Definitely Maybe and (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?, the latter of which featured the hit “Wonderwall.”
