Eric Dane has the neurodegenerative disease ALS, he tells People.

I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as a new chapter begins, says the 52-year-old American actor.

ALS stands for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a progressive and incurable neurodegenerative disease. The nerves that control the muscles become increasingly damaged and eventually stop functioning.

As a result, patients increasingly have difficulty walking, talking, eating and breathing.

Dane starred as Mark Sloan, also known as McSteamy, in the series Grey’s Anatomy from 2006 to 2012. He also plays one of the leading roles in the HBO series Euphoria. Filming for the third season will start soon.

I am grateful to be able to continue working and look forward to returning to the set of Euphoria next week, says Dane.
