American singer Roberta Flack passed away Monday morning at the age of 88, her management announced.

She was best known for her hit Killing Me Softly with His Song.

We are deeply saddened that the great Roberta Flack passed away this morning, February 24, 2025, writes Flack’s management.

She passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family. Roberta broke boundaries and records.”

No cause of death is reported. In 2022, it was announced that Flack had been diagnosed with ALS and had stopped performing.

Flack made her breakthrough in 1972 when she scored a number 1 hit in America with the song The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.

The song had already been recorded in 1969, but only became popular three years later because it was used in the Clint Eastwood film Play Misty for Me.

Killing Me Softly with His Song was released in 1972 by American singer Lori Lieberman. Flack covered the song a year later and scored a number 1 hit and a Grammy Award with it.

In 1996, the song became an international hit again, after rap group Fugees covered it.

Other well-known songs by Flack are Tonight I Celebrate My Love, Feel Like Makin’ Love and The Closer I Get to You.
